This week, we made several big advances on our gardening efforts!
1. The first basil harvest

I was able to make 4 containers of pesto for the freezer and share the jar of basil cuttings pictured with Joy and Robyn. Plus, I added a few leaves to my homemade zuppa toscana the evening that I harvested and it gave the soup the most amazing “little something!”
2. More plants in the ground

I planted our watermelon and basil seedlings on our pyramid trellis and sowed some nasturtium and marigold seeds on the corners.
I planted three varieties of peppers in rows (bell, pepperoncini, jalapeno).
And I got a bunch of squash in the ground too (buttercup, spaghetti, zucchini, and yellow crookneck).
3. I mulched more around the perimeter of the garden.
There is a never-ended battle against weeds around here. Enough said.
4. And I pruned our tomato plants!
We always pluck off any “suckers” growing on our tomato plants and clip excess foliage, as needed, to train our tomato plants to grow tall and viney. This worked beautifully for us last year, so I am hopeful for another bountiful tomato harvest this year.
There is definitely still more to do. We have corn seeds and bean seeds to sow, and we still need to plant our pumpkin seedlings into our designated patch.
Given how many seedlings we still have left too, we may end up expanding our garden plan even more!
Come back soon for more garden updates!
