DITL: Day in the Life

This week, I figured I’d share a snapshot of my life.

Here’s what a random day in my life entails.

Wake Up

4:30 a.m. – I woke before my alarm this day, which always feels better than being pulled from sleep.

I began my day by catching up on some grading in an online course that I teach. I started hydrating by sipping on my iced chai tea while I worked.

Exercise

5:15 a.m. – I headed out for a 4.5 mile run in my neighborhood

This day was a little unusual. Typically I head out around 5:15 to meet Joy or Robyn for an early morning hike, run, and/or strength training and yoga workout. I had been sick earlier in the week, however, so I opted to skip meeting up with one of them to make up my missed long run (I’m currently training toward an 8-mile race in September).

Since I skipped my commute to exercise this morning, I ended up with a little extra time before I would normally need to shower and prepare for the rest of my day.

I used this extra time to do some yardwork.

Breakfast and Getting Ready

7:10 a.m. – My first task when I quit working in the yard after about an hour was to make breakfast for my kiddos.

I kept it simple this morning with scrambled and over-easy eggs and sourdough toast.

7:20 a.m. – Next up, shower time. I had definitely worked up a complete sweat this morning.

Our shower takes forever to warm up, though, so while I waited for the water to heat, I took a moment to wipe down the sink and clean the toilet. There is no better time to clean a toilet than right before you’re going to shower anyway.

7:40 a.m. By this point, I was clean and dressed for my day. I hurried to throw a load of laundry into the washing machine since I had missed my usual nightly routine of setting a delay cycle, and then prepared a quick green-packed smoothie for my own breakfast.

My Workday Starts

8:00 a.m. – I settled down with a full bottle of water and my smoothie and logged in to work. I love my work-from-home days because the extra time saved commuting allows me to accomplish so much more!

12:00 p.m. – lunchtime! I had an hour break, so I roasted broccoli, cauliflower, and kielbasa on a sheet pan and served it with more sourdough bread and some leftover potato salad. While the oven was on, I also threw in a zucchini bread to bake.

I also used this break time to water plants on the deck, deadhead my herb plants, and plant some arugula and broccoli rabe seeds.

Before I had to get back to work, I moved the laundry onto the clothesline to dry.

After Work

Our evening plans this day got scrapped because A. started to feel sick midway through the day. He was planning to bring the kids to a friend’s house to swim for the afternoon and then grill dinner.

The boys were all disappointed they weren’t able to see friends, but we improvised an alternative fun evening.

My mom took them to the local library for a weekly Lego program, and when they got home, I popped some popcorn and baked up frozen pizzas.

We spread blankets on the living room floor and called it an impromptu pizza popcorn movie picnic!

I put my youngest son to bed after the movie and then took the older kids out for ice cream; we have been doing some summer review work for school, and every time they complete 10 days of summer work, they get to choose a fun activity.

Bedtime

I finished the evening out after the older two kids headed to bed by watching a replay of one of the first World Cup games and then settled in to sleep!

I need to break my habit of using screens right before bed, but since it is World Cup season…chances are slim that will happen now!
