Peel-and-stick stair update

This week, I had an Amazon gift card burning a hole in my pocket.

Well, not my literal pocket. It was digitally uploaded and all. But I was still eager to use it!

Especially since no-spend September is coming up…

But I digress.

Anyway, I have been thinking about updating the main stairwell in my house (which leads from the basement we’re renovating up to the main living area). The finish on the wood was worn in several places and they generally looked shabby.

BEFORE

It only took me about an hour or an hour and a half max since they sell peel-and-stick stair decals in standard or near-standard sizes for the average stair heights. I only needed to trim the ones I bought a bit for them to fit.

Then I slowly peeled away the backing and started at one corner. I adhered the corner and used a thick rectangular magnet (in lieu of a credit card or plastic putty knife) to smooth the sticker out as I moved across each step front.

I then smoothed vertically in sections across the stair front again to get rid of any bubbles.

AFTER

When I initially started, I was a little nervous about how the finished product would come out. The decals only came in three colors/finishes and I was looking for a less repetitive pattern.

But other than the bottom two steps having the similar finish, I was very pleased.

I’m not sure how long it will last. I cleaned the stair fronts but they get pretty dusty from the consistent traffic up and down.

For a total cost of $23.20 out-of-pocket after a coupon and the gift card balance, though, I’ll be happy if they last a year.
